This road was renumbered during 1887.[1]. This renumbering was to put the numbers in order; the upper portion, between Cornwallis Street and the railway bridge havng been built later than the lower terraces, post 1873, and referred to as 'Upper South Terrace'[2][3].

The lower portion of the road has always been prone to flooding - this occurring after a combination of heavy rainfall and high tides over-filling the Priory Stream culvert which divides into two half-height tunnels just below the road surface - the road surface actually being below the roof of the full-height culvert. Investigations in 2023 between Hastings Borough Council and Southern Water following the January 2023 floods (after which maintenance of the culvert was agreed to be the responsibility of Southern Water) revealed that the outlet and much of the pipe under Denmark Place had been blocked with shingle. For a period whilst the obstructions were cleared, pumps were installed at the outlet and the outlet was extended on the foreshore[4].
