Headmaster at the combined Parker and Saunders schools between 1781 and 1791, John Shorter was a jurat of Hastings for forty years, a magistrate, and eight times Mayor of Hastings.[1] he married twice, his first wife dying young and had two children by his second marriage, of which the youngest died whilst still a baby.
