Hastings Mayors

From Historical Hastings

Selection of Mayor

There have been a number of methods of selecting Mayor. In 1920, the previous practice of alternating between a Conservative and Liberal Mayor - this having been employed since 1904[1] was dropped in favour of a ballot being carried out of the councillors[2]. In order to break a stalemate in 1939, when no candidates could be found who were willing to accept the mayoralty Councillor Tingle suggested that perhaps the longest serving member of council should be elected - a brainwave that had apparently come to him whilst reading a newspaper story about a fried fish trader being made Mayor. This proposal was rejected[3]
