Originally a short road providing access between Queen's Road and Wellington Square (Queen's Road originally joining Harold Place at the Albert Memorial to give access to the A259), Albert Road underwent fairly substantial modifications in the late 1980s/early 1990s when numbers 10, 11 and 12 Queen's Road were demolished to widen the western-most junction, followed by clearance of some properties on Castle Hill Road, Middle Street and finally a larger-scale demolition of properties on Castle Street to extend the road to join the A259, with a pedestrian underpass reinstating pedestrian access along Castle Street - work finishing by the end of 1990[1].
