Upper Light

From Historical Hastings

One of a pair of lights used by the fishing fleet to navigate back into the harbour. The Upper and Lower Lights were aligned to give the correct heading into the Harbour via a channel through the underwater rocks. The light was originally located in Oak Passage.

The current light has been in position on the West Hill since 1851; it having to be relocated to this spot on what was land owned by Lady Waldegrave following the construction of the new market hall in George Street[1]. A 21 years lease of ground on the West-hill was agreed with Sarah Whitear at £1 per year, with Mr. Arckoll’s (the tenant’s) consent[2]. Google Maps incorrectly gives the location of this as being a smuggler's lookout[3].
