Albert Small was born in 1866 and in his adulthood first served as a soldier, rising through the ranks to become an officer of the West Kent Yeomanry. Moving to Hastings, he joined the local lodge of the Freemasons. He would appear to have had something of an entrepreneurial streak, becoming Managing Director of the bottled water manufacturers Griffin Woodcock & Co Ltd, first in Hawkhurst in his native county, then expanding into Earl Street, Hastings. He saw a demand for coach tours of the surrounding areas and opened the Central Garage in the early 1900s to facilitate his charabanc tours[1].
Following a fall in Queen's Road during the early evening of on the 7th of November 1921 as a result of an apparent heart attack (he had suffering for heart issues for a period), he was found to be deceased by passers by who rushed to help. At the time of his death he was resident at 5 St. Matthew's Gardens[1].
