Construction
Nelson Road was constructed on part of the Stonefield Estate, with plans being submitted for this road, Milward Road, Wellington Road and Milward Crescent being submitted to the council by Edward Sayer-Milward in January 1883. These plans were accepted at a council meeting on the 2nd of February (this having been the third time the plans had been submitted), subject to the proviso that proper connections be made to the paths across the West Hill, with no diversions in route of said paths. Councillor Catt wished that a meeting be progressed with a view to the council gaining control over the whole of the West Hill, although this was not forthcoming[1]. By 1884, it would appear that road layout and construction was well underway, with the press reporting on the completion of many of the properties along all four roads and advanced plans for connection of the properties to the water and sewage pipes serving the area; 51 plots of land being offered at a well-attended auction at the Castle Hotel on the 8th of May 1884[2].
Construction of an imposing new building in grey stone for Hastings Grammar School, with a curved drive leading to this road was completed in 1883. This site is now covered by Saunders Close and Becket Close, a 1980s housing development.
