Born in Ashford around 1834 and moving to Hastings around 1861[1], by 1867 James Dorman had taken over the Royal Victoria Library, renaming it to Dormans Library. In addition to the library, he printed a periodical - the Hastings & St. Leonard’s Advertiser[2].
The periodical was eventually sold to F. J. Parsons. In addition to his library and newspaper-man career, Dorman was a staunch Conservative and officiated as a side-man at Christ Church St Leonards. In the 1870s, he successfully fought as a candidate for the west-ward of the town council, and was approached to become Mayor on numerous occasions but declined each time. A freemason (and W.M. of the Derwent Lodge), he was a Justice of the Peace and served as an auditor to the Borough. Dying at home at Braybrook Terrace, a property he had occupied for 21 years to the day of his death, he was interred in the graveyard at Church in the Wood[3].
