Hughes and Hunter
The firm of Hughes and Hunter were building contractors who, during the 19th century, undertook construction of the sea wall at St. Leonards and many other projects around the town including numbers 72 to 109 Marina, St. Paul's School and St. Andrew's School[1]. The partnership was dissolved around 1861 when Mr. Hunter retired, Henry Hughes continuing work in the same field[2]. They had premises at 1, 4 and 5 East Ascent and Norman Road[3], and brickfields near Bopeep and the Harrow Inn[1]. Upon the death of Henry, the business was carried on by his sons (Henry and E. Hughes).
Henry junior passed away at the young age of 45 in 1878, although he reportedly had a full life; as well as running the family firm, he served as a Councillor and member of the Board of Guardians[1].
