Bo Peep
History
The Bo Peep receives its first published mention in Stells Guide to Hastings from 1794 and describes the house as serving "excellent tea and good cream alfresco with a fine series of views available" from the hillock behind the public house. It did however appear to receive mixed reviews, for an 1815 guide ("A Guide to all the Watering and Seabathing Places") referred to it as a "wretched house by the road-side". The tavern was originally known as "New England Bank", the 'Railway Terminus Inn', or the Old England Tavern. Being fairly isolated, the inn under whatever name was utilised at the time was quite often featured centre-stage in reports of smuggling, the beach being readily accessible and the land open for quite a large area. Ultimately the pub was demolished to create West Marina Railway Station and the remains were re-discovered in the 1970s when the station was demolished. The publican was compensated and constructed new premises to the east of his original establishment in 1847[1]. The current public house called Bo-Peep is situated some distance to the east on Bexhill Road[2].
