Volunteer Inn

From Historical Hastings

This pub was located at 55[a] Middle Street, opening before 1870, with the lease being put up for auction during 1881[1]. Post-closure around 1948, it was a tobacco and confectioners warehouse in 1957 [2]. Most of the road was demolished for re-development during the early 1970s and is now covered by Priory Meadow.

Window Fall

On the 10th of September 1898, an seventeen month old girl who was staying with her parents at the inn, fell from a second floor window onto the pavement below, hitting and bending the iron support bar of a lamp post on her way down. Other than a few bruises, she miraculously showed no other injuries.[3]
