Vandeleur Crake was a lawyer, Justice of the Peace and was associated with a wide variety of organisations in the town. He was the founding president of the Hastings and St Leonards Chess Club[2] and constructed one of the first houses on Essenden Road. In 1860, Crake was one of the first members of the Cinque Ports Rifles[3].
