St. Mary's Cottages
These originally five[1] but now only three (numbers 1 and 5 being demolished) cottages are built on a ledge between Gensing Road and Mercatoria and accessed via a passageway between numbers 13 & 14 Gensing Road. Numbers one to three were constructed and appear on Gant’s plan of 1851, before the remaining two were constructed at some point after this date. Number 1 was demolished circa 1999 and buttressing put in place to support No. 2[2]. There was a planning application to extend Number 2 in 2017, however this was withdrawn, apparently due to a high number of neighbouring properties complaints[3].
Mentions in local press
The occupant of number 1 attempted suicide in 1936 by means of swallowing rat poison mixed with banana and ice-cream. She fortunately survived the attempt, but was subsequently remanded in custody - suicide being against the law at the time.[4]
