This imposing building on the corner of Elphinstone Road opposite the junction with Laton Road would appear to have been constructed contemporaneously with the surrounding building that took place between 1873 and 1897 (most likely around 1880 when a number of advertisements for property for sale/rent in the area appear)[1]. For a period in its early life functioned as a school; St. Mary's Academy under the Rev. J. Rees[2].
