Slough

From Historical Hastings

The slough was a portion of the Bourne Stream that had been dammed with a sluice-gate to collect water above the Old Town. Periodically, the gate was opened to release the waters into the lower reaches and give the residents clean water. The slough was filled in and turfed in 1835[1]
