Ponbay Bridge

From Historical Hastings

This bridge (now replaced by a culvert under the road) carried the Ore Stream beneath what is now Elphinstone Road at the foot of the valley. The name (Pond Bay) suggests iron workings were in the vicinity at some point in history and J. Manwaring-Baines suggests that it is possible the stream was dammed here to provide power by means of a watermill. During 1861, some slag found in the area was displayed at the Sussex Archaeological meeting. Alternatively, the name may merely be a corrupted form of 'Pond by (the) Bridge'
