Mad Moll Mitchell
From Historical Hastings
Mad Moll Mitchell resided in the lower part of All Saints Street, near Pulpit Gate and was held to be a witch by the Fishing Community. In those days, the fishermen had to pass by the cottage to reach the stone beach and the door of the cottage portented an omen for those intending to "go to sea". If the door was ajar or open the Omen was favourable, but on the other hand, if the door was shut the omen was a warning of disaster and such was the fear of fishermen that none would "put to sea" unless the door was open.
"One Fisherman didn't believe in this wise old tale and set off to sea whilst after seeing the door was shut and was not ever seen again..." - Jack Mitchell
