Ellis Brothers (Hastings) Ltd

From Historical Hastings

On 28 June 1888, the Eversfield Estate granted a 99-year lease for a property located on Battle Road to Archibald Ellis of Franklands, Sedlescombe Road. The property was situated behind land on the street frontage that had previously been conveyed to him. Ellis later purchased the land subject to the lease for £270 on 23 January 1892 and subsequently mortgaged the property for £2000. By 1897, a terrace of houses numbered 1-15 (odds) Battle Road had been constructed on the street frontage[1].

On 1 September 1923, Ellis, operating as a timber and builders' merchant under the name Ellis Brothers, transferred ownership of the property to Ellis Brothers (Hastings) Limited, which discharged the existing mortgage. In 1931, Ellis Brothers entered into an agreement with Hastings Corporation regarding windows that had been inserted into the southwest wall of the public baths and wash-houses[1].

On 8 February 1946, Ellis Brothers sold the property for £3,500 to Claude Santer Frowd, Frederick Clifford Smith, and Lewis Harold Pyke, who were trading as Frowds and Farmers Direct Supply Dairies[1].
