Cock in the Pot

According to legend, an uprising of locals against Danes who were occupying the area in the 9th Century was foiled by a cockerel crowing, awaking the Danes.
As a result, every Shrove Tuesday, a game was played known as cock-in-the-pot, in which sticks were thrown at an earthen pot containing the bird and whoever succeeded in breaking the pot won the cockerel. The game also appears in the folklore of Brighton with the same origin story. The tradition died at some point in the 1800s.
