Chapel Field

From Historical Hastings

While the sources don't pinpoint the exact reason for the "Chapel Field" name in St. Leonards, there are hints suggesting a link to older religious structures. The "Chapel Field" was located next to the "Warrior Field," a name likely connected to the Battle of Hastings. The discovery of human remains, coffins, and weapons while creating Adelaide Place in 1831 suggests a burial site and perhaps a chapel nearby, possibly giving rise to the name "Chapel Field."

Adding to this is a legend of a chapel with a burial ground near "Goat's Point." Several other religious remnants found in St. Leonards, including potential chapel or church remains near Verulam Place and Cuckoo-hill, plus bones at Bohemia near an old almshouse, point to a strong religious presence in the area before St. Leonards existed.

However, there's no firm proof in the sources of a specific chapel directly tied to "Chapel Field," leaving its name's origin uncertain.
