Royal Albion Pub

From Historical Hastings
(Redirected from Albion Hotel)

Constructed circa 1803[1], Ross described this as being 'the most delightful house of entertainment in the town' in his town guide.[2]

Directly behind the hotel, on the opposite side of George Street was located the Albion Shades, also operated by James Emary with stabling located in the mews behind (adjacent to the West Hill Lift). For a period in the late 19th century, a horse-dealer, T. Akehurst & Co., operated from these stables[3].

Auction of Royal Albion Hotel & Carlisle Hotel contents 1910

On the 26th of September 1910, the contents of the hotel were put up for auction by Messrs. J. J. Hill & Weaver of London, the sale being advertised nationally in the Daily Telegraph of 23rd September that year.

According to a 1950s planning application to renovate the stables and convert into warehousing, there was also a cottage beside the lift on the hillside above, although it is unclear whether this was related to the stable block.

2020 Renovations[edit]

Whilst the pub was closed due to the Covid 19 outbreak, it underwent substantial renovations both inside and out, including a mural on the corner wall painted by Alfie Chabilan.
