Also known as The 'Home for Destitute Girls'[1] or 'Home for Poor Girls'[2], the Hastings & St Leonards Girls Training Home moved in to East Hill Lodge,45 Tackleway in 1873[2]. The school found itself in debt during the 1930s[3], but continued running until it finally closed in 1945, when the property was put up at auction[4]. The property was then converted into a private home.

As a 'Certified School', the home offered accommodation and education to children that would otherwise have been placed into the Workhouse in addition to children from other sources. Provision for this scheme was made by the Poor Law (Certified Schools) Act of 1862[5]. During the 1930s, it was reported that the school had 23 girls on its roll under the care of the Matron, Miss May[3]
