The corporal punishment of Females is now abolished by the Legislature, but it was formerly used in Hastings with no very sparing hand, as the following extract from the Records of the Town will shew .
- "11th January, 1776, at the Sessions, Ann Colbran indicted for Petit Larcery - verdict guilty - sentence that on Saturday 13th Inst., at noon she should be striped from the waist upwards and tied to the common wipping post, and wipped till her back was bloody ."
Since the 43rd of Edward the Third, Hastings has returned two members to serve in parliament, who are elected by the jurats and freemen .
