Manning the Navy. In the month of May, the Government's inducements and Capt. Gough's energies succeeded in getting thirty lads between 14 and 19 years of age to be sent on to Portsmouth. Her Majesty's birthday was celebrated with ringing of bells, flying of flags, and a salute of 40 rounds (one for each year) by Martin MacDermont, who also fired the salute in 1834, when the Queen, as Princess Victoria and her mother came to St. Leonards, on which occasion MacDermont had some fingers blown off.
