Born in Biton, Gloustershire, the Rev. W. W. Hume was the first curate of St. Mary Magdalen Church; reading the prayers at the Consecration service in 1852[1]. This followed the death of his first wife, Lucy in Germany on the 22nd of October 1845 (possibly in childbirth - his son Charles being born in that year). Returning to England and marrying his second wife, Augusta, in 1847, he came to St. Leonards around 1852 bringing his family with him to take up the curacy of St Clements Church. Alongside his duties as parish priest, William also was an active member of the St Leonards Mechanics Institute, being elected to the committee and a frequent speaker at the lectures organised by the Institute.
