Victor Place

From Historical Hastings

The section of Priory Street, Cornwallis Terrace and Havelock Road near to Station Approach would appear to have been known as Victor Place after either a property in this location called Victor House certainly from 1873 until circa 1956[1]. From an 1873 plan, the name would appear to relate to three terraced properties facing onto Hastings Railway Station, however a number of advertisements exist implying that there were as many as 30 properties.

Although the name may have still been used by local residents who remembered the earlier name, it would appear to have been largely subsumed into Priory Street, Cornwallis Terrace and Havelock Road by 1895. Number 28 is listed as being next door to Greens Hotel[2], number 30 would appear to have actually been in today's Havelock Road[3], and the lower numbers in Priory Street[4]. At least one of the properties was utilised as a holiday-let in the late 19th century.

Newspaper Mentions

In 1875, George Stephens (13) of 1 Victor Place was arrested with two other young lads in connection with a theft of five watches from the Pelham Arcade. Insufficient evidence was given as to his involvement and he was subsequently acquitted.
