St. Johns Church

St. Johns Church

Situated in Upper Maze Hill and adjoining Pevensey Road, St John's Church originated in 1867 as a temporary daughter-church to Christ Church in London Road. This church was destroyed by a fire on the 1st of December 1878[1]. This was replaced by a permanent building designed by Sir Arthur Blomfield in 1881, however much of the church's fabric has been replaced following extensive bomb damage in 1943, with the rebuilding overseen by the architect Mr. B. Goodhart-Rendel. The foundation stone for the new church was laid by the Princess Elizabeth on the 18th of May 1951, with the Bishop of Chichester overseeing the service of dedication[2]
