Sir Howard Elphinstone (1773-1846)
Born to John Elphinstone, who was vice-admiral of the Russian Fleet. Howard was the owner of much land within Hastings including Ore Place, Hole Farm and Ridge Farm. A military man, he entered the army as a second lieutenant in the Royal Engineers on the 17th of October 1793, first seeing service during the capture of the Cape of Good Hope in 1795; this leading to the first of a number of promotions during his service serving in theatres across the world, culminating in the award of a baronetcy - the first baronet Elphinstone of Sowerby; the bestowal of a C.B. and his eventual rank of Major-General[1].
His son Howard, the second baronet, was Member of Parliament for Hastings (1835-1837) and Lewes (1841-1847)[2].
The extensive lands owned by him to the north of Hastings were divided up following the death of his widow, Frances, in 1858.
