Ragged School

From Historical Hastings

The 'Ragged Schools' were educational establishments for those children who proved difficult to manage in normal educational settings, or those children of paupers who could not fit in to the aforementioned schools. These were normally set up on a parish-by-parish basis. In 1862, the Hastings school received a new building[1]; the school having been in operation for a number of years prior to this date, with the first references to a Ragged School in 1856[2]. In 1873 the school was under the leadership of Miss Paton[3].
