Edward Lisiecki and his young English wife had four children between 1849 and 1852 whilst they were in Hastings, living at 26 Russell Street, three of them after his accident working on the railway line in 1850. Eight of their ten children died before reaching their third birthday. In Poland he had been an army captain. He arrived in the UK as a refugee in 1838, where to make a living he became a railway labourer. At the time Brett wrote of his accident, he was the only person born in Poland resident in the town[1][2]
