Benjamin Carswell (1699-1766)

From Historical Hastings

A member of the Carswell Family of millers, either Benjamin (or his son - also Benjamin) was known to have been the miller at the earliest known mill in Hastings.

Marrying Ann Moore in 1734, he was left a widower when Ann died (possibly during childbirth) in the same year as their son, Benjamin's birth. Ann was buried on the 17th of July 1737 in St. Clement's graveyard[1]. He would appear to have remarried - an Elisabeth Carswell occurs on property deeds within the Milward Archives.

In March 1757 there is record in the Milward archives of a transfer to Thorpe Diamond of the following property[2]:-

  1. A tenement with ouhouses, stables, etc in All Saints and in the occupation of Benjamin Carswell
  2. A barn and 22 acres of land and wood in the parishes of All Saints and Fairlight, held by the said Benjamin Carswell for the residue of a term of 1000 years.

Carswell would apparently have acquired a large amount of property, there being in the Milward Archives also record of the mortgaging of "A tenement with buildings, outhouses, etc, in All Saints" and "A barn and 22 acres of land called the Pindars, in the parishes of All Saints and Fairlight" to Sir Godfrey Webster of Battle with a redemption value of £103 on 25 March 1735[3].
