1983 Gary Collins Murder
Gary Collins Murder (1983) - The Man with the BMW and the Dog[edit]
The Gary Collins murder refers to the unsolved killing of 25‑year‑old Gary Collins, whose body was discovered in woodland near Brightling, East Sussex, in March 1984. Collins and his dog, an Alsatian‑cross named Trudie, were reported missing in December 1983.
Background[edit]
Gary Collins lived in a rented flat on St. Thomas’s Road. He worked part‑time as an egg packer but was also involved in small‑scale drug dealing.[1].
He was last seen on 12 December 1983, leaving his home with his dog. A later Crimewatch reconstruction referred to him as “the man with the BMW and the dog,” highlighting his distinctive vehicle and companion.[2]
Collins’s BMW was later found abandoned and unlocked at Battle Railway Station, several miles from his home.[2]
Discovery of the Bodies[edit]
On 3 March 1984, three months after Collins disappeared, the bodies of both Collins and his dog were discovered in woodland near the Gypsum Mine at Brightling.[1] Collins had suffered severe injuries, including:
- A fractured skull
- Five stab wounds to the back
- A deep cut to the throat
The dog had also been stabbed. Collins was described as “barely recognisable” due to the extent of his injuries.[2]
Investigation[edit]
Movements Prior to Death[edit]
Detectives established that Collins had travelled to London shortly before his disappearance, visiting Camden, Islington, and Kensington, areas known for drug activity in the early 1980s.[1]
He had changed from moccasins into Wellington boots before his death; the moccasins were never recovered and were considered a potentially significant clue.[2]
Theories[edit]
Several theories emerged during the investigation:
- Forced trip to the woods: Forensic evidence suggested Collins was alive when he arrived at the woodland site, raising questions about whether he went voluntarily or under duress.[1]
- Hidden drugs or money: Investigators considered whether Collins had gone to retrieve something concealed in the woods.[2]
- Contract killing: Given his drug connections, detectives explored the possibility of a targeted killing.[1]
Witness Sightings[edit]
Police appealed for information about a blonde woman in a brown coat, seen with Collins on the A21 Battle–London Road on at least two occasions. She was also seen with two unidentified men carrying grey disposable bags.[2]
Despite extensive enquiries, neither the woman nor the men were ever identified.
Later Developments[edit]
In 2021, regional media again highlighted the case as part of a broader review of unsolved murders in Sussex.[1]
