This imposing white building on the north-west edge of St Leonards Gardens would appear to have not always been known as Gloucester Lodge. Brett states that it was formerly called Castellated Villa, then Gloucester House, then Gloucester Lodge. Another name of the building appears to have been North Villa[1].

Princess Sophia Matilda stayed here during 1831[2][3]

Monument to James Burton in garden

Monument to James Burton[edit]

In the lower portion of this property's garden adjacent to the fence separating it from the public gardens is a monument to James Burton, consisting of a pink granite rounded-top obelisk with a likeness of James Burton in the form of a bronze plaque. It is inscribed 'James Burton Founder of St Leonards 1828 Born 1761 Died 1837'. The granite obelisk features a water-fitting under the inscription, which originally ran into a bowl and later had a tap attached (now non-functioning). This monument is Grade II Listed (Historic England listing 1286757) separately from the house which is also Grade II Listed (Historic England listing 1043417).
