From Historical Hastings

The Cornwallis Estate is a hereditary estate passed on through descendants of Sir John Cornwallis (c.1491–1544). The estate in the guise of the 5th Earl Cornwallis (James Mann (1778-1852)), with the family owning much of the land that Hastings is built upon, gave rise to many road names in the Borough of Hastings; Cornwallis Street/Earl Street/Mann Street. Brook Street in the same area is believed to have been named after the victory at the Battle of Bound Brook in which the 1st Earl Cornwallis was a commander in 1777.

Linton Road is also linked to the Cornwallis family; Linton Place was a large estate owned by James Mann.
