Known to have been educated at Branscombe House Preparatory School, then Charterhouse School. Leaving school he joined the family brewery , undertaking a management trainee attachment to a brewery in Norwich, Norfolk. Whilst courting his first wife Gertrude Frances Woodd they used to act together in amateur theatricals. He served in WW1 initially as a Sub Lieutenant (acting Lieutenant) in the Royal Naval Division.
